About the Delatite
The Delatite starts on the slopes below Mount Buller and Mount Stirling. It drops through the valley past Merrijig and Mirimbah, runs across the open country near Mansfield, and finishes in the Delatite Arm of Lake Eildon.
It is a mid sized freestone river: clear water, gravel and stone bottom, and a steady pattern of runs, riffles and pools. That makes it well suited to dry fly and nymph fishing, and a good river for learning to read water. You can see the structure the trout hold on, and practise putting a fly on the right seam.
The upper river near Merrijig has more of a mountain stream feel. Lower down near Mansfield it opens out into wider runs with farmland on the banks.
Where we fish on the Delatite
John picks the stretch on the day, based on the season, the flows and what you want to get out of the trip.
A guided day on the Delatite
The Delatite is a good choice for beginners and for anglers who want to sharpen their dry fly fishing. Clear water means accurate casting matters, and John will help you with that on the bank and in the water.
Every trip is a half or full day with John beside you on the water the whole time. Waders, boots, rods, reels and flies are all supplied, and catering is included. If your casting needs work before you hit the river, a casting lesson in Benalla is a good place to start.
