The closest of John's rivers are about two hours from Melbourne. Leave early and you can fish a full day on the Goulburn below Lake Eildon and still be home that night.
Up the Hume and the Great Alpine Road to Myrtleford and Bright. Plan to stay the night.
Drive times are a rough guide and depend on the stretch John picks for the day.
A day trip from Melbourne
A day on the lower Goulburn is the simple option. Leave the city early, fish a full day with John, and drive home in the evening. Lunch, snacks and drinks are covered, so all you need to organise is the drive.
If a 5am start doesn't appeal, a half day works too. You'll have more time on the road than on the water, though, so most Melbourne anglers choose the full day.
Making a weekend of it
For the Delatite, the Howqua or the alpine rivers around Bright, most people make a weekend of it. Mansfield, Eildon and Bright all have plenty of places to stay. You can book a day on two different rivers and see more of the region.
What's included
Every trip is a half or full day with John beside you on the water the whole time. Waders, boots, rods, reels and flies are all supplied, so there's nothing to pack but yourself. Catering is included, and dietary requirements are catered for.
Casting lessons in Benalla
Benalla is about three hours up the Hume Freeway. If your casting needs work, a three hour lesson there on the way up gets you ready before your first day on the river. More about casting lessons.
Plan your trip from Melbourne.
Tell John where you're coming from, which days suit and what you'd like to get out of the trip. He'll suggest the river and plan the day around it.
