About the Buckland
The Buckland starts in the high country of the Alpine National Park and runs north down a long, narrow valley. Much of the valley is bush and state forest, with a road running up it from Porepunkah.
It is a smaller river than the Ovens it feeds: clear water over stone and gravel, short runs, pocket water and pools tucked against the banks. In water this clear, trout can see you as easily as you can see them, so a careful approach matters.
The Buckland was one of the busiest gold rush valleys in the 1850s. Today it is a quiet, forested stream, only a few minutes from Bright.
Where we fish on the Buckland
Upper Buckland
Smaller water in the forested upper valley.
Lower Buckland
Runs and pools near Porepunkah, close to where it meets the Ovens.
John picks the stretch on the day, based on the season, the flows and what you want to get out of the trip.
A guided day on the Buckland
The Buckland suits anglers who want to work on stealth and accuracy, and beginners who want to learn on small water with a guide beside them. It pairs well with a session on the Ovens on the same day.
Every trip is a half or full day with John beside you on the water the whole time. Waders, boots, rods, reels and flies are all supplied, and catering is included. If your casting needs work before you hit the river, a casting lesson in Benalla is a good place to start.
